Company History

History of Our Organization

After a successful career providing vocational services to individuals with disabilities, our founding director Ms. Virginia Kerensky was inspired to establish a nonprofit committed to providing highly individualized, person-centered, and community based services. As a result of her efforts, Project Genesis, Inc. was created and incorporated as a non-profit organization in September 1991.

In the early days of the Project Genesis, Kerensky worked on her own providing job development and job coaching skills with funding from the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services. She worked in the community and from her kitchen table helping each consumer secure competitive employment in their field of interest. As demand for services increased, Kerensky hired employees and opened a business office in Willimantic. In 2016 our BRS services expanded to include “Level Up” transition services for students with disabilities to help prepare for “the workplace, college and life.”

In 1992 Project Genesis began providing special education transition services to Ellington Public Schools. Since that time, Project Genesis’s Special Education Support Services program has expanded to work with over 40 area school districts and several colleges.

In 1999 Project Genesis began providing extensive services to adults with acquired brain injuries under the Medicaid Waiver Program. This program empowers people to live full lives in their communities and presently serves over 60 people.

Today Project Genesis has over 230 employees, each of whom is dedicated to our mission. Employees are carefully selected to predict a positive relationship with each consumer and student. Careful selection is predicated on the belief that when trust develops, consumers and students feel safe to grow, learn, and change.

Project Genesis expanded from an initial service area of northeastern Connecticut into the central and southeastern parts of the state. This expanded reach allows us to provide services to 240 individuals per year. Programs are designed to promote consumer participation as we provide the highest caliber of supports, directed toward an individual’s development of skills necessary to enjoy an independent and productive lifestyle.

Project Genesis is an award-winning organization having received the following recognitions:

2015 and 2016 Project Genesis placed in the top 15 for midsize companies and received special recognition for “Outstanding Meaningfulness” in the Hartford Courant’s prestigious “Top Workplaces 2015” list of the best places to work in Connecticut.

2015 Partnership Award from the Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC) for “outstanding support of BIAC events and promotion of brain injury awareness and prevention in Connecticut’s communities.”

2009 “Laurie DiGalbo” Award from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services was given to our ABI Program for exemplifying outstanding Acquired Brain Injury Services in Connecticut.

2007 Family-Driven Award from Families United for Children’s Mental Health, Inc. This award honored our SESS Program as exemplifying “exceptional family-driven practices, values and beliefs.”

We look forward to a future filled with expanded and enhanced opportunities for our consumers and our employees.
